This involved a 4 four stage process; first <a href=\"https:\/\/goldbook.iupac.org\/terms\/view\/P04740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"polymerisation \">polymerisation <\/a>followed by solvent exchange then polymer modification by partial hydrolysis and finally solvent removal.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initial work<\/strong>\u00a0was based on our customer\u2019s processing steps:<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lab scale manufacture of the 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;stage polymer manufacture was successful but scale up problems were identified due to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>mixing of the monomer and neat initiator prior to feeding into the reactor required a chilled mixing vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>extremely high viscosity during the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0stage solvent exchange meant we could not process this with our current equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Due to these problems<\/strong>\u00a0and the costs and delays that installing new equipment would entail our customer supplied their polymer for the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0and 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0steps:<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the modification of this polymer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.witton.com\/services\/process-development\/\" title=\"Process Development at Witton Chemical\">scaled up from the lab<\/a> to multi-tonne scale. Our final batch size was ~50% larger than our customers biggest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a new test method was developed to follow the process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the solvent removal was optimised for our equipment which allowed a reduction in total waste generation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>While the second project<\/strong>\u00a0was undertaken in parallel we:<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>identified a new process to manufacture the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0stage polymer that avoided the initiator\/monomer mixture and the solvent exchange<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>worked closely with the customer to demonstrate that lab samples made to this new process gave encouraging performance results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>set up plans to validate this by pilot plant trials to provide enough material for real world application testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-4979","case_studies","type-case_studies","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.witton.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/case_studies\/4979","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.witton.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/case_studies"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.witton.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/case_studies"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.witton.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4979"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
